Dr Anthony Galea, a lecturer at the Faculty of Science, won the European Public Speaking Championship at the 2018 JCI European Conference, in Riga Latvia – a first for Malta. Anthony was awarded in front of 1300 delegates from 60 countries, while representing JCI Malta. He will now defend the honour of Europe for the upcoming 2018 JCI World Congress, which will be held in Goa India coming October.
The topic of the semi-final round of the championship was “Sustainable transport is essential to achieving most, if not all, of the proposed Sustainable Development Goals” and the topic of the final round was “To successfully achieve the Global Goals for Sustainable Development by 2030, young people must increase their role as active citizens in their local communities”. Anthony impressed the judges of the competition, and astonished the audience by giving his talks a scientific twist, incorporating humour, and using props, thereby turning his talks into mini science shows.
The JCI European Conference included various training sessions targeting effective communication, management and business. Three other Maltese delegates representing JCI Malta competed at the English Debating Championship and made it to the final round.
