On Wednesday 23 October 2019, at 18:30, Dr Irene Incarico, Visiting Senior Lecturer in the Department of Italian of the University of Malta, will give a talk entitled ‘This Is My Radio / My Radio Star’ at the Italian Cultural Institute in St George's Square, Valletta during the 19th edition of the ‘Italian Language Week in the World’.
The talk, which will be held in Italian, will focus on the controversial figure of Vasco 'Blasco' Rossi, a musician who during the last 40 years of Italy’s history of music, has gone from the ‘free radios’ era to the contemporary digital platforms.
The rock star from Zocca, a small town in the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, a self-proclaimed ‘provocautore’, has left an indelible imprint on the musical scene and its languages, moving from an early disc jockey experience to the release of bestselling and ground-breaking records.
Vasco Rossi's distinctive lyrics have become anthems of several generations, and have also legitimised a new linguistic approach to the Italian songwriting tradition.
Dr Irene Incarico teaches study-units ranging from medieval literature to social history of pop music. She co-edited with Alice Favaro the book Eurofumetto & globalizzazione: Studi su graphic novel e linguaggi dei comics (La Spezia: Cut-Up Publishing, 2018).
