Prof. Borg works in collaboration with the laboratory of molecular genetics and the .
Together with fellow academics such as , he focuses on the genetics, haematology and cell biology of erythropoiesis and inherited rare blood disorders such as Thalassaemia, Sickle Cell Disease and other rare haemoglobin variants.
Together, they have continued building progress on the success attained throughout 2019. The team have now commenced their University of Malta research excellence project that spans over two years up until 2022.
Their project shall involve the close collaboration and cooperation between their laboratory and those based in Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, The Netherlands and those based in EMBL, Heidelberg, Germany.
The group are now testing a number of compounds that have shown great promise In the field of foetal haemoglobin induction and can serve as a basis for future work involving drug design, and development. These are aimed at treating patients suffering from Thalassaemia and Sickle Cell Disease.
Prof. Borg together with Dr Christian Spiteri (RSSD) are EMBL and EMBC council delegates representing Malta in this large European organisation on matters related to science and management of the life sciences across continental Europe and other associate partner countries.
