The University of Malta continues to achieve higher levels of recognition, as data recently released by world-renowned research group Webometrics places Malta’s foremost higher education institution in the top 2.5% universities worldwide.
Whereas in the January 2020 ranking, the University ranked 866th of around 30,000 higher institutions, July 2020 data registered a rise to the 817th position, placing UM in the top 2.5% institutions worldwide.
The also spell positive news for the University’s online reach, as the number of web pages related to UM, as indexed by Google, secured the 39th spot worldwide.
The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is an initiative of Spain’s largest public research body, with an aim to promote scientific research around the world and increase scholars’ commitment as well as the setting up of long-term strategies. It ranks every university across the world according to four main indicators, namely (1) Presence, or Public knowledge shared, (2) Visibility, or the impact made as shown on web content, (3) Transparency, or the number of citations from top authors, and (4) Excellence, or top-cited papers.
Webometrics have been published twice yearly since 2004. Data is first collected in January, and a final publication is done around the end of July.
