Three groups of University architecture students who are part of the faculty-based student organisation SACES, the Society for Architecture & Civil Engineering Students, have spent three days building a number of structures to strengthen and embellish the Valletta coastline.
A seating area and storage shelving, a large table and chairs and two conjoined swings designed to drop under the weight of the users were among the structures set up.
The students have undergone this project as part of a workshop organised ahead of the start of another academic year.
The idea behind the workshop was to increase the usability and public access to the space, with each of the three groups having their own idea for achieving this end goal:
- Skalda (Splinter), Group 1 – an intervention that gives users the additional comfort that the area previously lacked, as well as better accessibility to the sea
- L-Aħħar Ċena (The Last Supper), Group 2 – an exploration of the intangible heritage surrounding Valletta and its coastal communities, through chats with locals about their experience living in the capital city
- Mewġ (Waves), Group 3 – an installation; a mechanism aimed to enhance chance encounters and instigate interactions
The workshop was conducted in collaboration with Valletta Design Cluster and the Corporation for the Regeneration of the Grand Harbour.
