In November 2020, the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies published a commemorative publication reflecting on the 10th anniversary of the German Chair at MEDAC.
Through this publication, MEDAC highlights the instrumental role of the German Chair for Peace Studies and Conflict Prevention in the Academy’s educational mission.
It features the German Chair’s research, publications as well as seminars, conferences and workshops which bring together academics and practitioners from the Mediterranean region and beyond.
In the decade since the establishment of the German Chair, many initiatives and achievements were made possible through the efforts of Dr Monika Wohlfeld, the Holder of the Chair. Hundreds of young people from the Mediterranean region, including scores of North African diplomats, have now had the opportunity of studying security studies with Dr Wohlfeld, whose dedication, knowledge and practical experience make this course one of the key components of their post-graduate education at MEDAC.
Dr Wohlfeld’s emphasis on cooperation, mediation and multilateralism, as well as the significance of norm entrepreneurship are key messages that MEDAC shares with its post graduate students. German support has also provided MEDAC students exposure to German language courses, as well as the much anticipated annual study visits to Berlin and Bonn.
Germany’s proactive multilateralism in international relations, as highlighted by its close and friendly relations at a regional level in general and in the European Union in particular, provides MEDAC with a leading role model of diplomacy in action in the twenty first century.
Through this commemorative publication, MEDAC sheds light on the legacy of the German Chair at the Academy and reflects on the instrumental engagement of Germany in the context of educational opportunities for youth in the Mediterranean region.
MEDAC is proud of the efforts of the German Chair in championing a more peaceful and prosperous Euro-Mediterranean region, efforts which remain crucial for the foreseeable future.
