Epilepsy is a life-changing condition, and the majority of people who have it need to get used to the idea that they have to take medicine for the rest of their lives.
The University of Malta is undergoing research, through its Department of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, to assess what the best dosage of this medicine is.
Dr Hana Shabbi is researching the use and dosage of antiepileptic drugs, focusing on the need for personalised medicine.
However, UM also recognises the need to study the psychological implications of someone who has epilepsy.
Ms Christina Cutajar鈥檚 Bachelor in Psychology thesis focused on the stigma that people with epilepsy face.
How can we reduce this?
Dr Anna Micallef thinks we can tackle this through awareness campaigns, and by focusing more on patient education and empowerment.
