Do you think creativity can be exercised like a muscle or is it inborn? Most times when you think of creativity, you would envision Leonardo da Vinci painting the Mona Lisa or even Emile Nouguier and Maurice Koechlin who designed the Eiffel Tower, however can new ideas born in the corporate world be creative?
Dr. Margaret Mangion and Dr. Leonie Baldacchino from the Edward de Bono Institute for Creative Thinking and Innovation argue that creativity is a broad spectrum that covers many fields, including business. Creativity is not only limited to the arts. For instance, if an administrator in an organization comes up with a new and effective filing system for easier information access and proper storage then it can be termed as creative and innovative.
Inasmuch as creativity is important for the better running of an organization, there are certain factors that can help fuel the creative juices of employees such as remuneration, successfully completing a project and, most importantly, passion for your work.
"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do."
- Steve Jobs
According to a study done by Maryna Grechna, former Master in Creativity and Innovation student at the same Institute, the working environment is quite vital in helping employees be more creative. A great example is Microsoft, the company’s working environment is based on 6 pillars i.e. culture, flexibility, training and development, respecting human rights, wellness, total rewards, safety, diversity and inclusion.
Baldacchino and Mangion argue that there is a need for a creative manager, an individual who oversees the whole creative process and brings the business sense to the project. For instance, musicians have managers who help them in building their brand and in the long run, collaborate with companies for advertising purposes. Managers need to understand the dynamic of their team in order to lead effectively and foster creativity in their employees.
