The V/O Raoul Follereau Foundation (Malta), an affiliate of the Military & Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem in Malta has published a collection of archival material collated by Prof. Charles Savona-Ventura relating to the history of Hansen Disease or Leprosy in the Maltese Islands.
The history of this once dreaded disease reflects the varied attempts at chronic infection control in the light of the prevailing outlooks towards aetiology and infectivity during the different centuries.
The infection was eradicated in Malta following the Malta Leprosy Eradication Project initiated in the 1970s.
It is no longer an endemic disease, but the Maltese community can still be exposed by migrants coming from regions where the disease is still rife.
This publication is a useful collation of information, archival notes and statistical data related to the disease. This 120 page A4 book may be purchased as a print-on-demand hardcopy from .
All profits will go towards the charity funds of the Raoul Follereau Foundation (Malta) whose aim is to help missionary organisations working to help ameliorate the conditions of existing victims of Hansen Disease.
