VENTuRE - a Virtual and physical ExperimeNTal Towing centre for the design of energy Efficient sea-faring vessels - is an ongoing Horizon 2020 project that kicked off in January 2020.
The premise is to bring together international leading research organisations, namely the University of Strathclyde from the United Kingdom and the University of Genoa from Italy, with local institutions, such as the University of Malta and Naval Architecture ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ Ltd., to transfer knowledge and enhance the scientific and technological capacity in the field of ‘energy efficient ship design’.
The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Malta is pursuing the investment of a towing tank facility.
Yet, to be able to operate and sustain towing test procedures in the long term, training, support, and expertise are required from entities that are highly experienced and skilled in this field.
Through this project, the University of Malta is collaborating with the partners to exchange knowledge, enhance the networking capacity, and raise the research profile. This is being done through various tasks and activities such as short specialist courses, workshops & seminars, expert visits, conferences, student exchanges, secondments in industry, winter and summer schools, and more. The completion of this project will enrich the Maltese maritime industry by providing a basis of scientific and technological capacity.
The VENTuRE project has recently submitted evidence of its aims & outcomes, in relation to the Maltese maritime industry, in application of the organised by the Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST).
The premise was to reward Maltese beneficiaries for having participated in research and innovation projects within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme. The scheme recognised the achievements in nine different award categories, eight for legal entities and one for individual researchers. The VENTuRE submission was kindly awarded the winning application for the Blue Award by the panel of judges. The collaborative effort was a cojoined UM-NAS initiative, with NAS as the official representatives.
