A medical research team from the University of Malta who won the 2020 Intellectual Property Award for Scientific Initiative, has now announced that the design registration of their novel surgical procedure has been granted by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EU IPO).
The novel surgical procedure, which eliminates the need to use carbon dioxide insufflation for the trans-oral endoscopic approach to thyroid surgery, also leaves the patient with minimal scarring in their neck while benefitting from an improved safety profile.
The team consists of Dr Christian Camenzuli, Prof. Pierre Schembri Wismayer, Prof. Jean Calleja Agius, Prof. Ing. Jonathan C. Borg, Ing. John Paul Borg and Josef Attard.
