The fourth Malta International IMAESC student seminar took place, via zoom, on Thursday 10 June, 2021. IMAESC stands for International Master in Adult Education for Social Change.
The University of Malta, through its Department of Arts, Open Communities & Adult Education, is a participant in this Erasmus Mundus degree programme and has been so since its inception in 2016.
The seminar, organised and convened by Professor Peter Mayo of the same department, consisted of addresses by the Faculty of Education Dean, Dr Colin Calleja, and the department Head, Professor Carmel Borg and seven student paper presentations.
The seminar was concluded by a keynote presentation on Adult Education in Ireland by Dr Brid Connolly of the National University of Ireland (Maynooth).
This year’s seminar marked a resumption of this annual event at the end of the Malta semester following a one-year hiatus owing to the onset of COVID-19.
The previous three seminars were held ‘face to face’ at the University with invited guest speakers present physically or virtually. This year’s presentations were from students from Brazil (Marina Pujol Bushmann), Canada (Olivia Siino), South Korea (Helin Jeong), the Philippines (Francisco B. Bautsta Jr; McRhon Banderlipe I), Tajikistan (Viktoriya Ivanenko) and Vietnam (Nhi Nguyen Chau Bau). Topics covered included Adult Migrant Education, Teaching of English among Adults, Adult Teaching Philosophies, Adult Education curricular experiences, Sustainability, Learning Cities, University Resilience and Growth.
For the first time, the seminar proceedings were recorded in keeping with University protocols. Professor Mayo chaired all three sessions and the rest of the proceedings.
