Prof. Silvio Aliffi, President of the Associazione Sicilia-Malta visited the UM Library on 25 June 2021 and presented a number of books dealing with law and economics, on behalf of renowned lawyer and academic Gaetano la Piana.
For more than thirty years, La Piana focused on civil law, and acquired a reputation for his sense of foresight, both in legal circles and also in academic ones. He was successful in introducing a number of reforms in Italian civil law practice which were considered as minor revolutions back in the day; for example ensuring that in separation proceedings the two spouses had separate legal representation, at a time when it was common for the parties to use the same lawyer very often resulting in the said lawyer favoring one party over the other.
Prof. Aliffi, a very close collaborator of Prof. la Piana, was very happy to fulfil Dr La Piana’s wishes by giving the said books to the UM library.
On this occasion, Prof. Aliffi also discussed the work of the , including a study which was conducted into the Maltese descendants residing in Pachino, and expressed hope that in future there would be room for collaboration on different levels, between the association and various academics from the University of Malta.
On the UM’s part, the Dean of the Faculty of Laws, Dr Ivan Mifsud, the Director of Library ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ, Mr Kevin Ellul, accompanied by Library Manager, Mr Silvio Cortis who saw to the logistics of the event, thanked Prof. Aliffi for the kind donation and assured him that the books will be available very shortly for our students and other library users.
