Understanding the effects of the pandemic on the development of European adolescents

The University of Malta has recently participated in a panel of experts during an Erasmus + transnational meeting which was aimed at promoting an understanding of the effects of the pandemic on the development of European adolescents.

The project was called 'Methodology and guiding tools for the narrative construction of the identity of European adolescents at risk of social exclusion'. 

This meeting was held at the  (CEMU) in Madrid. The program included an online meeting so that adolescents from Greece, Italy and the Netherlands who were unable to travel to CEMU because of the pandemic could also participate in the event. 

The project came about due to a collaboration between CEMU and the Yehudi Menuhin Spain Foundation (FYME), both of which form part of the networks of the Platform of Children's Organizations of Madrid (POI Madrid).

NGOs from Belgium, Cyprus, Greece, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain participate in the initiative. In addition, there is the collaboration of a group of experts made up of six European researchers from different disciplines: Jos茅 L. Linaza (Autonomous University of Madrid), Fernando Broncano (Carlos III University of Madrid), Damian Spiteri (University of Malta), Luca Tateo (University of Oslo), Pina Marsico (University of Salerno) and Jaime G贸mez (Francisco Vitoria University of Madrid).

The ultimate purpose of this collaboration has been to improve education, training and participation systems to meet the needs of the most vulnerable adolescents living in multicultural environments in relation to the development of their identity. Non-formal educational tools were created for educators and youth workers, within the theoretical framework of Popular Psychology, Narrative Theory, Narrative Therapy, Popular Narrative, Cultural Identity and Intercultural Education. 

During this meeting, the partner organisations, with the assistance of the Panel of Experts, shared the work carried out during the pilot workshops that had been carried out in Amsterdam, Athens, Bologna and Madrid with young Europeans at risk of social exclusion during the pandemic months.
