On Wednesday 1 September 2021, in the course of the regulatory International Collaboration Program between the Dutch Medicines Evaluation Board and the Malta Medicines Authority, the Department of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery invited Dr Emiel van Galen to deliver a lecture entitled: “Herbal products in the European Union – why is it such a jigsaw puzzle?”.
Undergraduate and postgraduate students following courses at the Department of Pharmacy, academic staff and collaborators participated.
Dr Emiel van Galen is a medical doctor and has life-long experience at the Dutch regulatory Agency in evaluating a wide range of products from botanical origin.
He is the current Chairperson of the Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products at the European Medicines Agency.
From his personal perspective he presented not only a holistic introduction into the regulatory framework for herbal products, but also mentioned several examples of herbal drugs, reflected on aspects of cannabis for medicinal use, and provided an overview of the approach to food supplements and novel foods.
