French Department hosts French film producer Julie Billy on campus
On the 11 October 2021, students of French as well as members of the general public had the opportunity to interact and discuss with Julie Billy, the producer of 'Gagarine', a French film selected for the Cannes festival and screened at Spazju Kreattiv too, and co-producer of 'The Lobster'. She is also a co-founder of the Collectif 50-50 to promote equality and diversity in the French cinema industry. The Collectif was behind the Cannes red carpet silent protest in 2018, led by Cate Blanchett and Agn猫s Varda.
Julie Billy outlined her fascinating career trajectory, starting from studying French literature at the Sorbonne to finding her vocation as a film producer and setting up her own film production company. She also explained the challenges faced by the Collectif 50-50 and the initiatives implemented in favour of gender equality. Prof. Thierry Tremblay, Head of the French Department presented the guest speaker and Dr Marilyn Mallia (Senior Lecturer) moderated the ensuing discussion. The event was organised in collaboration with the Cultural Service of the Embassy of France in Malta.
