The Department of Gender and Sexualities has always emphasised the importance of community engagement and activism. It is organising and has been participating in numerous activities marking the United Nations’ 16 days of activism, which officially span from the 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to the 10 December, Human Rights Day.
The Department, in collaboration with the Women's Rights' Foundation, has organised a round table on sexual violence with stakeholders, to see how they can improve the situation for sexual assault survivors on a local level. Following this event, a coalition to present an activist front is also being planned.
Another event that the Department is involved in - through Prof. JosAnn Cutajar - plans to raise awareness regarding gender-based violence, whilst also providing information with regard to the support services that exist on Campus. Departmental students will also be taking part in this event.
Our students will also be presenting some of their work at another online event entitled 'Different Perspectives on Gender Based Violence' on the 2 December at 18:30. To register for this event, please email Ms Martina Farrugia.
Through the aid of Dr Marceline Naudi, the Department will also be participating in the launch of the Malta Observatory on Femicide, which is being held at the Commission on Gender-based Violence and Domestic Violence on the 3 December 2021. In the past, Dr Naudi was the coordinator of the European Observatory on Femicide, which was hosted by UM between 2018 and 2020. Dr Naudi is also participating in international events to mark the 16 days of activism. The participating countries include Portugal, Romania, and Ireland.
