Professor Joseph Borg from the Department of Applied Biomedical Science, at the University of Malta participated in the Decadal Survey on Biological and Physical Sciences Research in Space 2023-2032.

This survey sought to review the state of knowledge in the current and emerging areas of space-related biological and physical sciences research and generate recommendations for a comprehensive vision and strategy for a decade of transformative science at the frontiers of biological and physical sciences research in space.

The study report will help NASA define and align biological and physical sciences research to uniquely advance scientific knowledge, meet human and robotic exploration mission needs, and provide terrestrial benefits. [PDF]

The white paper seeks to address standardization of omics experiments that include single-cell RNA-sequencing and spatially- resolved transcriptomics experiments. These are needed to extract more information from biological specimens exposed to spaceflight. Moreover, harnessing the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will also reduce the time required by astronauts to physically work on scientific experiments. 

Professor Borg is also slated to speak in January 2022 next month at the  on Project Maleth. The festival is UK’s largest genomics event, and also a place for the global genomics community to meet, learn and get inspired.

Project Maleth’s first mission took Malta’s first biomedical science experiment to the International Space Station and back. The first set of analysed data are expected to be completed early next year and this forms the basis of an ongoing doctoral project by biomedical scientist Ms Christine Gatt supervised by Dr Graziella Zahra and Professor Borg at the University of Malta.
