The Rector of the University of Malta, Professor Alfred Vella, has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding thanks to which the Institute of Maltese Studies launched a collaboration agreement with The Phoenicians' Route – A Cultural Route of the Council of Europe.
Coinciding with the celebration of the feast of St Paul on 10 February, the Institute of Maltese Studies marked its membership of the Phoenicians' Route, the cultural heritage itinerary recognised for its excellence by the Council of Europe, by adhering to its International University Network (IUN). The National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta hosted the event "The Phoenicians' Route for Creativity and Innovation. Challenges for the future" supported by the Ministry for Finance, Heritage Malta and the ADRC Trust and organised in collaboration with the cultural association Inizjamed.
A delegation from the Phoenicians' Route made up of the President, Director and Executive Secretary, representatives of the Scientific and Steering Committees met the Maltese members of the Phoenicians' Route.
A copy of the Council of Europe certification was delivered to the two new Maltese members, namely the Local Councils' Association Malta and the University of Malta represented by the Institute of Maltese Studies Director, Prof Carmel Cassar. Prof Cassar was supported by Route scientific member Dr Karsten Xuereb on behalf of Inizjamed.
