Professor Gil Gambash from the University of Haifa in Israel was hosted by the Department of Classics and Archaeology at the University of Malta in June 2022. Professor Gambash is a historian who focuses on the ancient Mediterranean. Formerly the chair of the Department of Maritime Civilizations and director of the Recanati Institute for Maritime Studies at the University of Haifa, he is the co-founder and Director of the Haifa Centre for Mediterranean History.
Whilst in Malta, Professor Gambash delivered a number of lectures to the students and staff members alike. Moreover, a lecture entitled "Forecasting ancient weather:
the challenges of environmental history” was open to the public and very well received. Making the most of his stay in Malta, he had the opportunity to observe deep water archaeological operations being conducted by Heritage Malta with the support of the University of Malta. Discussions were held to develop collaborative projects in the near future.
This visit was made possible thanks to the ERASMUS+ ICM programme and through the strong ties that exist between the Universities of Malta and Haifa.
