A Bilingual Glossary of Mathematics Terms (Glossarju Bilingwi ta’ Termini tal-Matematika) was launched by the Hon. Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation (MYER), Dr Clifton Grima on 7 July 2022. The working group that compiled the Glossary was chaired by Prof. Marie Therese Farrugia (Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education, Faculty of Education).
The other members are Mr David Muscat and Dr Lara Ann Vella (National Agency for Literacy) and Ms Melanie Casha Sammut (Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programmes, MYER). The document is published by the National Literacy Agency within the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation. A soft copy of the Glossary may be viewed .
The aim of the Glossary is to provide words and expressions that can be used as part of bilingual communication of mathematics at the Early Years and Junior levels of education (ages 3 – 11 years). The resource, which has been developed keeping in mind already existing classroom practices, provides a comprehensive bank of words and expressions that can be used as part of the mathematics register.
The comprehensive list of words can help teachers bring out nuances of mathematical meaning, and can also encourage consistency across class and school contexts with regard to mathematical terms in their spoken and written form. Terms are provided in both English and Maltese and an example is given for each word to illustrate how it might be used in a context. To date the following Curricular topics have been included: Number (counting, number relationships, place value, addition and subtraction), Measurement, Shape and Spatial relationships.
Other topics will be added following the period of public consultation that is now open until 30 September 2022. All stakeholders and interested persons may forward their feedback through the .
