Dr Stefano Moncada, Director of the Islands and Small States Institute (ISSI), and Mr Luca Nguyen, Research Support Officer, presented the project “Beyond Pandemics: Improving climate resilience and health systems in small island states†at the University of Mauritius on 11 and 12 July 2022.
The project received the Research Excellence Award in December 2021, financed by the University of Malta’s Internal Research Grants Programme, and started in March 2022. The project employs a mixed-methods approach to assess health systems in the two small island states of Malta and Mauritius, investigating factors capable of increasing both climate & health resilience.
Dr Stefano Moncada and Mr Luca Nguyen presented an overview of the project and the initial results from the systematic literature review, showing the importance of addressing health and climate crises with a synergistic approach, however, so far missing when tackling such crises, especially in small islands. The audience was composed by academic staff, Master and PhD students from different departments of the University of Mauritius, as well as member of public authorities and Ministries.
The next steps of the project will be to collect primary data via participatory focus groups and representative household surveys, both in Malta and Mauritius, to then analyse the data and proceed with academic conferences, publications and policy reports.
