Professor Maria Attard, Head of Geography and Director of the Institute for Climate Change & Sustainable Development was invited to deliver a keynote address at the AIIT 3rd International Conference TIS ROMA 2022 earlier in September. Prof. Attard spoke about the role of active travel to achieve sustainability, resilience and inclusivity.
The objective of the keynote was to raise awareness about the need for more active travel policies, the need to encourage modal shift from the private car for environmental and health benefits, but also to highlight some of the more political challenges that cities face when implementing active travel measures.
At the conference, Ms Karyn Scerri, a UM doctoral student under the supervision of Prof. Attard, presented her research entitled Assessing Perceptions of Pedestrian-focused Intervention in a Car Dependent European Island, in a session dedicated to research on active mobility chaired by Professor Graham Parkhurst (UWE, Bristol).
