Mark-Anthony Falzon’s The Sindhis: Selling anything, anywhere has just been published by Penguin. Sindhis are an ethnic group originally from Sindh, today a province of Pakistan. They make up a global diaspora and are well known for their business savvy. The book, which is partly based on fieldwork in India, looks at the social and cultural infrastructure that sustains Sindhi business and its networks.
It provides historical context by tracing the origins of Sindhi trade to processes such as the annexation of Sindh by the British in 1843. It also locates Sindhi business within the dynamics of the contemporary Indian diaspora and features several case studies from India and elsewhere (including Malta).
Prof. Mark-Anthony Falzon is a social anthropologist and a resident academic in the Department of Sociology in the Faculty of Arts.
