Professor Luciano Mule' Stagno and Professor Ing. Charles Yousif, Director and member of academic staff of the Institute for Sustainable Energy respectively were invited speakers in expert panels at "The European Green Deal and the National Energy and Climate Plan in Malta" organised on 22 September 2022 in the Maltese Parliament.
This was a National workshop organised by the European Forum for Renewable Energy Sources (EUFORES) focusing on the National Energy and Climate plans for Malta and the European Green Deal. Prof. Mule'Stagno, in his intervention spoke on the need to pass from talk to action. He pointed out that while Malta had make good progress in the last decade or so, a bigger effort was now needed if we are truly to reach carbon neutrality or energy independence in the next 25-30 years. He pointed out that the war in Ukraine has changed Europe's perspective on Energy - and now we are thinking as much in terms of energy security as we are on cost.
Malta could reach the level of RE required only if it looks offshore, where luckily we have ample space ample space and the technology for offshore floating wind is already maturing and prototypes have been deployed and our group is among those developing offshore floating PV systems and we are ready to deploy our first full-scale prototype. Prof. Yousif in his intervention
Several MP/MEPs, the Minster for Energy, Industry and society stakeholders and UM academic members of staff participated. More information about this Workshop in the Maltese Parliament is available .
