The has just issued the 45th edition of The Gozo Observer. This publication once again presents a number of interesting articles relating to Gozo.
’s editorial treats the issue of ‘Gozo’s Construction Mayhem’, while in his article, ‘Herbal and Traditional Medicine in Gozo’, describes some common botanicals that are found in Gozo, as well as their medical importance in the use of herbal medicines.
In his article ‘Managing the Dangers of Soil Erosion in Gozo’, outlines the importance of conservation programmes being put in place, in order to manage soil erosion, to which Gozo is particularly prone. Doctor Michael Refalo gives an interesting account of Gozitan nineteenth century migration, in his article, ‘Who Were They and Where Did They Go? Gozitan Applicants for Passports 1871-1921.’
Kenneth Grima, gives an intriguing account of Gozitan seafarers who achieved certificates through education between the early 19th century and the Second World War, in Part 1 of his article, ‘From Ratings to Officers’. In his article, ‘My Xlendi’, Dr Joe Zammit Ciantar recounts fond, unfading memories of his childhood in Xlendi in the 1950s.
In another article, ‘The Work of the District Nurse in Gozo in the Past’, Doctor Mario Saliba describes the workload of the district nurses during the second half of the 19th century till the end of the Second World War.
A book review by Giovanni Bonello, is included about, ‘1551 – the Siege that Stifled Gozo’, authored by Rev. Dr Fr Joseph Bezzina.
