The Junior College has signed a collective agreement with the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) on 7 November 2022 at the University of Malta Quadrangle. This agreement will lead to better conditions for the Junior College academic staff as well as an increase in opportunities by introducing a qualification allowance for staff who further their education and acquire a second Masters or PhD.
Through this collective agreement the academic staff at Junior College can advance from an Assistant Lecturer to Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in a reasonable period of time. In addition the Academic Enhancement Leave will be reduced to eight years of service. Moreover, the Masters in Teaching and Learning would be a requirement when recruiting an Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer or a Senior Lecturer I at Junior College.
“Thanks to this agreement, we are giving more value to our educational drivers, the lecturers are the leaders to the success of our future generations. Educators are the best investment we can possibly do in our country. This agreement proves the value of our educators and we will ensure that this will be open for discussion with the Malta Union of Teachers in the coming months.” said Minister for Education, Sport, Youth and Innovation Hon. Clifton Grima.
The MUT President, Marco Bonnici, emphasised that this agreement is the recognition of all the hard work done by academics at Junior College. Undoubtedly the University of Malta shall treat Junior College Lecturers as the main protagonists in the education of students leading to university he concluded.
“This Agreement shows the true appreciation and the importance that the University of Malta shows towards Junior College, which is the institution that prepares our potential students to further their tertiary education. We wish nothing but the best for all the academic staff in their educational journey" stated Prof. Alfred J. Vella, University Rector.
