19 academics of the University of Malta, of whom 18 come from the Faculty of Theology, and six foreign academics, among others, contributed to a celebratory volume entitled Fidelis et Verax: Essays in honour of His Grace Mgr Charles J. Scicluna on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of his episcopal ordination.
Fidelis et Verax means ‘Faithful and True,’ the motto chosen by Mgr Scicluna when he assumed his episcopal ministry. Edited by the current and former deans of the and respectively, the volume is 672 pages long and features scholarly studies on Scripture, patristics, philosophy, ecclesiastical and Maltese history, moral theology, bioethics, inter-religious dialogue, feminism, canon law, the protection of minors, a bishop’s ministry, and others.
The publication also includes a short biography about Archbishop Scicluna, an explanation of his coat of arms, an image of a painting executed by Architect Edward Micallef, a Foreword by , and an index.
In the words of the editors, the publication is meant to encourage the Archbishop of Malta as he endeavours to hold high the noble virtues of faithfulness and truth which he chose to mark his ministry. It was the intention of the contributors to provide him with a number of learned articles that would be instrumental in his mission.
On 26 November 2022, the volume was presented to the Archbishop at the Palace of San Anton, Attard, in the presence of the President of Malta, Dr George Vella, and the University Rector, . The President, who himself contributed with an article, addressed the guests and noted the similar experiences he and the Archbishop go through as head of state and head of the Church respectively.
Renowned Dutch academic and professor of canon law, Prof. Myriam Wijlens, spoke about Archbishop Scicluna’s significant contribution to the field of the protection of minors on an international level. Cordia Quartet skilfully performed some classical pieces.
