Three years have passed since the start of the research project entitled SEAM, regarding Surface Engineering for Additive Manufactured parts used in marine transportation. The project between the Maltese and Chinese researchers from the University of Malta鈥檚 Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering and from the Southeast University鈥檚 School of Materials Science and Engineering came to an end recently.
This project, led by Dr Ing. Ann Zammit and Prof. Jian Chen, was successful in achieving its main aim, which was to determine the suitability of the application of additively manufactured and surface treated parts for marine transportation. On Tuesday 28 February, the team members showcased their results during the end of project seminar held at Esplora.
It was the perfect opportunity to show the achievements and outcomes of the SEAM project to Hon. Keith Azzopardi Tanti (Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation), H.E. Yu Dunhai (Ambassador of the People's Republic of China in Malta), Prof. Ing. Simon G. Fabri (Pro-Rector for Research and Knowledge Transfer, UM), the Ministry of Science and Technology (China) and Dr Tonio Portughese (Chairman of the Malta Council For Science & Technology). Additionally, Dr Roberta Metsola (President of the European Parliament) also delivered an address, highlighting the importance of such research and innovation. The seminar was attended by staff members of the University of Malta and also representatives of the additive manufacturing and marine transportation industries. Meanwhile, researchers from Southeast University China followed proceedings and also participated online during the proceedings.
This research project was funded by the Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) as part of the Sino-Malta fund 2019-02 and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of the People鈥檚 Republic of China (2019YFE0191500).
