Prof. Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci's latest publication, Death unto Boredom, is composed of two essays: 'Death in an age when death means nothing' and 'The Heaven-ess of Boredom: A tribute to Malevich’s lightness of laziness'.
In these essays, the author tackles the concepts of death and boredom and their relationship with contemporary art, showing how contemporary art production has been shaped by, and is itself shaping, our notion of existence. Questions about nothingness and angst are trialed through the lens of art and philosophy, for which Schembri Bonaci offers replies both profound and uncomfortable. As the author posits, "Humankind is by today’s contemporary formulae defined according to the consumer-materialist component. Art follows suit."
A first version of the essay “Death in an age when death means nothing” was presented as a paper during the IV Annual Symposium on the Visual Culture of Death held in 2015 and convened by Prof. Conrad Thake.
Accompanying the essays are reproductions of original artworks by Matthew Shirfield and Roderick Camilleri, published in this book for the first time.
Death unto Boredom is edited by Nikki Petroni.
