‘New Work in Philosophy’ offers highlights (with a blog and a newsletter) fresh and interesting publications in philosophy.
In his recent entry , Prof. Gualeni discusses the contents of The Clouds (his latest monographic book) as well as his book’s relevance for the field of philosophy.
The Clouds, Gualeni explains, is a sci-fi novella. It's a work of fiction, but - at the same time - it is also a philosophical text: its narrative premises set the stage for the exploration of a handful of intellectually relevant ideas. Another reason why The Clouds might be of interest to people interested in philosophy, Gualeni continues, has to do with its editorial structure. The novella is only the first half of a larger book titled , which contains:
- eight parts of fiction (the chapters of the novella),
- three parts of nonfiction (three canonical essays), and
- a dash of meta-reflection (the afterword by the author).
In other words, the various philosophical, speculative themes of the book are first presented as fictions (weaved into the narrative of the novella, typically as key components of its development), and then discussed in the more traditional form of the essay (that is, explained argumentatively by leveraging actual facts as well as existing works on related themes).
The Clouds: An Experiment in Theory-Fiction (2023) is out with Routledge, and more information about the book is available .
