The Faculty of Theology has recently launched two publications edited by Prof. John Anthony Berry. These volumes showcase the proceedings of two international theology conferences convened by the same in recent years.
The two publications delve into the 'Reformation' inspired by Martin Luther and the concept of 'Resilience' in the face of life's adversities. '' (Vol. II) and '' (Vol. III) address two fundamental questions: 'Does Martin Luther's theology remain relevant today?' and 'How can we interpret resilience theologically?'
The volume on the '' is divided into three sections, exploring the historical context, theological issues, and contemporary relevance. It features 13 reflections from theologians and historians across Europe, primarily from Protestant and Catholic backgrounds (list of contributors is available ).
The '' volume comprises 19 contributions that delve into the theme's significance for society, the Church, and theology. It underscores the integration of resilience into theological discourse and its role in assisting individuals from diverse backgrounds to confront their fears, overcome challenges, and find meaning in their lives (please find the list of contributors ).
The book launch opened with a welcoming speech by the Dean of Theology, Rev. Dr Stefan Attard, who noted that the books presented are the result of a fruitful collaboration between Prof. Berry and local and international colleagues. Attard commended Berry's efforts in promoting academic exchanges and enhancing the visibility of the Faculty of Theology.
In the review of 'The Spirit of the Reformation', Prof. Dominic Fenech emphasised the Reformation's role in challenging established Christian authorities, with a focus on North-South geopolitical power dynamics. Rev. Dr Nicholas J. Doublet stressed the importance of commemorating the Reformation and advocated a return to the Church's foundational principles.
Regarding the second volume, 'Resilience in a Troubled World', Prof. Clare Vassallo highlighted the connection between hope and optimism in navigating challenging times, drawing parallels to the significance of Martin Luther's Bible translation. Prof. Nadia Delicata proposed a fresh interpretation of 'resilience', aligning it with Christian hope and transformation.
In conclusion, Rev. Dr Mark Joseph Zammit, the Head of the Department, pointed out that despite its modest size, the department stands out due to its consistent publications, including works authored and edited by Prof. Berry.
The editor, John Anthony Berry, is an Associate Professor of Fundamental and Dogmatic Theology and the former Dean of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Malta.
