TRACtion, "Tradition in Action," is an EU-funded project led by Dr Lorraine Portelli, from the Department of Health, Physical Education & Consumer Studies at the Faculty of Education. The project focuses on researching traditional costumes from three different countries and their associated craft traditions.
In October, the TRACtion team gathered in Helsinki, where they were interviewed by the Finnish National Agency for Education. Dr Portelli, in her role as the lead coordinator, provided a comprehensive overview of the TRACtion project. She emphasised the project's significance in preserving intangible heritage, specifically the traditional costumes of various European countries. During their visit to Helsinki, the TRACtion team collaborated with Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and the Conservation Department to conduct an X-ray analysis of the G魔onnella, a traditional Maltese garment. This analysis aimed to uncover intricate details and expand their knowledge about the construction of the G魔onnella. As part of their outreach efforts, TRACtion organised and participated in the Think Corner Event. During this event, the University of Malta presented an overview of the TRACtion project, including a historical background on the G魔onnella. Each partner country showcased their traditional costumes, explaining their origins and historical significance. They also discussed their contributions to the TRACtion project in terms of promoting these costumes to the general public.
Furthermore, TRACtion actively engaged in the ART Connect Project, organised by the University of Malta Library. In this initiative, four students, studying Costume History and led by Dr Zoi Arvanitidou, who is also the Research Support Officer of TRACtion, diligently revived and recreated a traditional G魔onnella. Their creative version of the G魔onnella is being exhibited to fellow students and the University community, providing an innovative and artistic approach to sharing knowledge about Maltese culture. Through the ART Connect Project and its various activities, these students effectively combined their knowledge of Maltese culture with artistic expression, contributing to the broader goals of TRACtion.
Additionally, this EU-funded project participated in the SEA-EU Photo Contest with the theme, "A Sea of Diversity." Within this context, TRACtion's focus was on highlighting the rich diversity associated with the traditional Maltese costume, particularly in relation to its connection with religious practices and beliefs. This thematic approach reflects TRACtion's commitment to shedding light on the intricate interplay between culture, tradition, and spirituality within the context of the Maltese society. By choosing the traditional Maltese costume and its religious significance as their subject, TRACtion aimed to underscore the unique cultural tapestry of Malta, where traditions and spirituality intertwine to create a distinct and multifaceted identity. The participation of the project in the SEA-EU Photo Contest not only serves as an opportunity to showcase the cultural richness and diversity of Malta but also aligns with the broader objectives of the TRACtion project, which include promoting cultural understanding, preserving traditions, and fostering intercultural dialogue. This engagement in the contest further demonstrates the commitment of TRACtion to explore and celebrate the intricate connections between culture and heritage. On 8 November, a recent event unfolded on the University campus, offering a unique experience for University students and staff. During this event, these students had the opportunity to wear the G魔onnella, and proudly roam around the University campus while dressed in this cultural attire. Concurrently, other fellow students and staff members were given a bookmark provided additional information about TRACtion. The underlying goal of this event was multifaceted. First and foremost, it aimed to educate individuals about the Maltese traditional costume, emphasising its cultural and historical significance. By actively involving some students in wearing the G魔onnella, the event sought to revive interest in and appreciation for this traditional attire. Furthermore, it underscored the importance of preserving and celebrating cultural heritage in the present day, as a living and dynamic part of contemporary society. This event served as a bridge between the past and the present, shedding light on the enduring value of traditional costumes and their role in Maltese culture.
