A project led by the University of Malta, Essays Beyond Borders (EBB), has secured funding under the ERASMUS+ Programme to promote the essay as a tool for civic engagement, to strengthen the participants’ critical and creative writing skills through essay writing, and to produce cutting-edge research on the essay and essayistic writing.
EBB aims to offer over 16 writing workshop series in Malta. These will be aimed at University students, students in Post-Secondary education, and the general public.
The scope of the project also includes hosting an international essay writing school in Pisa in 2026, and the generation and open dissemination of research, academic publications, and pedagogic material on essayistic writing.
One of the key themes of EBB is environmental awareness, and writing workshops will often focus on topics such as climate change and planetary matters. The workshops will allow participants to develop their writing voice; to experiment with different writing processes; and to find alternatives to writing understood as the simple reproduction of already given knowledge or models.
Prof. Mario Aquilina, from the Department of English, is Project Lead. Prof. Adrian Grima, from Id-Dipartiment tal-Malti, is also participating in the project.
Other partners in the project are The University of Groningen, Ghent University, Universita’ di Pisa and the Slovene Writers’ Association.
