The announces its participation in the MedSeaRise project, an initiative addressing the pressing issue of climate change and its impact on sea level trends. The project, funded under the Interreg EuroMED Programme, seeks to enhance risk assessment methods associated with the Mediterranean Sea's fluctuating levels, a phenomenon affecting coastal ecosystems, cultural heritage, and various industries, including tourism.
The MedSeaRise project commenced in January 2024 and is set to conclude in March 2026. It is a collaboration between six partners and one associated partner from Greece, Italy, Spain, France, Montenegro, and Malta. The University of Malta's involvement is spearheaded by , , and . They are leading Work Package 2, focusing on information analysis, methodology development, and tool generation.
A pivotal moment for the project was the Kick-Off meeting, held on the 20 and 21 February 2024 in Thessaloniki, Greece. The event, organised by ANATOLIKI S.A, the lead partner, in partnership with the Municipality of Kalamaria, convened representatives from all consortium organisations. Discussions centred on identifying sea level rise challenges specific to each region of the Mediterranean, recognising the varied impacts of this issue across the different member countries. A representative from Community4Nature of the Interreg EuroMED Programme also participated and highlighted the programme's objectives and potential networking activities to amplify and leverage project outcomes.
As the MedSeaRise project advances, the University of Malta remains committed to contributing valuable research and insights towards sustainable adaptation strategies to safeguard our future against the evolving challenge of sea level rise.
