A public consultation on the reform in the voluntary sector has been launch, aiming to ensure that the sector has the necessary tools for different entities to operate as efficiently as possible.
The reform is intended to create a simpler registration process for voluntary associations, among other things.
Through the public consultation, the creation of an Office of the Commissioner for the Voluntary and Not-For-Profit Sector is being proposed.
The reform is being prepared after an extensive consultation process that began in December 2021 under the patronage of President George Vella, with over 1,300 meetings having been held, and two research projects with the University of Malta.
The projects were conducted by the UM鈥檚 Faculty for Social Wellbeing in collaboration with the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector (MCVS) and the Office of the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations (OCVO).
With regards to the MCVS, , whereby essential data started being collected in order to get a clearer picture of the present situation in the voluntary sector while addressing the needs to consolidate the present operation, move forward and possibly grow further.
With regards to the latter, an agreement was signed in 2022 for a research project about the Contribution of the Voluntary Sector to Maltese society.
Minister for Inclusion, Social Wellbeing and Voluntary Organisations, Hon. Julia Farrugia Portelli said she hopes that through this reform, she can see a widespread dialogue on a national scale.
