The Faculty of Arts has just received a large donation of books, bequeathed to it by the late Ann Williams. Ann Williams lectured in modern history at the University of Malta during the early 1970s. She thereafter moved to universities in England and Scotland, but retained her connections with, and affection for, our university. She also exported to the UK her keen interest in Mediterranean studies, an interest she originally acquired during her stint teaching at the University of Malta. For her generosity and the ambassadorial role she informally took wherever she went, the University of Malta bestowed the degree of Doctor of Literature (D.Litt) honoris causa in 2011.
Back in 2010, when the Faculty of Arts built its own library, Ann had donated half her book collection, with a promise to donate the remainder in her will. Sadly, Ann passed away last year. Her husband, Anthony Mallet, himself a former lecturer at the University of Malta, took care to transfer her books to us.
The Faculty of Arts Library can now boast to have one of the most comprehensive libraries on the Mediterranean anywhere. It will stand as a tribute to the support and love that Ann has given throughout her life to the Faculty of Arts, the Department of History and its students and alumni.
