A local team of researchers who have been working on a cooling technology called ICECAP (thermoelectrIc Cooler for elECtronics Applications), have scored big, as they have just been awarded first place for Scientific Initiative at the recently-held Malta Intellectual Property Awards, after having recently placed 3rd in the Electronica Fast Forward 2024 competition.
Through this project, the use of multistage thermoelectric modules (TEMs), novel assembly techniques and innovative optimisation algorithms, lower temperatures can now be achieved in smaller packages, allowing for easy integration within portable devices.
The compact cooling module developed can be integrated within a multitude of portable devices such as high-speed cameras, low light microscopes, and radio receivers.
The same technology has also been applied for vaccine transportation.
The team, consisting of Prof. Ing. Marc Anthony Azzopardi, Assistant Lecturer Mr Andre’ Micallef, R&D Lead, and Research Support Officer, , from the Faculty of Engineering, expressed their gratitude for the feedback received all throughout this project in a recent post on social media.
