On 19 February, staff and students from the Department of French at the University of Malta visited the Sport-Friendly photo exhibition by French photographer Emilien Buffard. The exhibition, held at the foyer of the University of Malta Library, provided an insightful look into the themes of inclusivity and representation in the world of sports.
Dr Anne-Marie Bezzina Busuttil, Head of the Department of French, addressed the students, highlighting the core values of liberty and equality, which are fundamental to both the French and Maltese Republics. She emphasized the importance of ensuring a strong presence in the sports community for groups including persons with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and women, who continue to face discrimination in various parts of the world.
M. Thomas Lamouroux, Director of the Alliance française de Malte Méditerranée, provided an overview of the exhibition’s history and offered insights into the significance of the photographs on display. Each image told a powerful story, shedding light on the resilience and achievements of underrepresented groups in sports.
Throughout the visit, students had the opportunity to follow these thought-provoking speeches in French, enhancing their linguistic and cultural appreciation. They also engaged with the exhibition, reflecting on the diverse narratives captured through Buffard’s photography. The visit served as both an educational and inspiring experience, reinforcing the importance of inclusion and representation in all aspects of society, particularly in the realm of sports.
M. Ryan Grima, a graduate of the Department of French and a leader at the LGBTQ+ well-being service within the Foundation for Social Wellbeing, also addressed the attendees. He spoke about the importance of visibility and advocacy for LGBTQ+ persons in sports and beyond, emphasizing how exhibitions like Sport-Friendly play a crucial role in fostering awareness and acceptance.
