The University of Malta recently hosted a pivotal meeting for the , an initiative involving partners from across the Mediterranean including Greece, Italy, France, Spain, Montenegro, and Malta, to address the critical issue of sea level rise.
Organised by Dr Adam Gauci, Prof. Alan Deidun, and Prof. Sebastiano from the Department of Geosciences, this two-day event held on 1 and 2 April brought together experts to develop strategies for safeguarding coastal communities and ecosystems.
In this project, the University of Malta leads Work Package 2 which focuses on creating a detailed Impact Assessment Framework to analyse the potential impacts of rising sea levels on Mediterranean coastlines. Attendees reviewed progress made so far on various case studies, exchanged technical insights, and discussed strategies to extend the impact of the project.
Julia Bonello from the Energy and Water Agency (EWA) provided insights into Malta鈥檚 water sources, disucssed advanced water management technologies like desalination and reclaimed water, and presented the high energy demands of these technologies. Her presentations also covered efforts to monitor water quality and manage resources through legislative measures and innovative technological solutions.
The success of the meeting was greatly attributed to the logistical coordination by David Ramirez Montano, Audrey Zammit, Lucienne Bugeja, and all the team at the Conferences and Events Unit at the Valletta Campus. Additionally, special thanks go to Stacy Goodlip and Jessica Busuttil from the Project Support Office for their expert handling of the financial management.
