The University of Malta Council, at its meeting of the 17 June 2025 agreed with the recommendation of the Senate and the Honours Committee that Dr Gauden Galea be appointed Honorary Professor in recognition of his distinguished public health expertise, with more than two decades of leadership roles within the and for his contribution as an authority in control of noncommunicable diseases, health promotion and policy innovation, and for his pivotal role in shaping global health strategies.
Dr Galea qualified in medicine in 1984 at the University of Malta and trained as a public health physician at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He was Director of the Institute of Health Care, the precursor of the Faculty of Health Sciences. He has recently retired from his appointment as Strategic Advisor to the WHO Regional Director and Head of the Special Initiative on Noncommunicable Diseases and Innovation.
His wealth of experience, research acumen, and interdisciplinary approach make him an invaluable addition to the University of Malta's academic community as an Honorary Professor.
