As part of the Nudging Active Travel (NAT) project, the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development (ICCSD), in collaboration with the Western Regional Council, has been working to promote walking and cycling across Malta鈥檚 Western Region. A key achievement of this initiative has been the identification and mapping of a walking and cycling network, supported by physical information totems across several localities. These totems provide useful travel data, such as walking and cycling times to key destinations and QR codes to access route maps.
The ICCSD is pleased to share the latest development: the publication of a new titled "Recommendations for Infrastructural Improvements in Support of Active Mobility." This report outlines key areas across the region where upgrades in infrastructure could significantly enhance the safety, accessibility, and appeal of active travel.
As we approach the conclusion of the project, this report aims to inform future planning efforts and guide stakeholders in creating a more walkable, bike-friendly environment for all. The next five totems in the Region will be installed in the coming months, and the project will culminate with the final active travel workshop.
