This year’s Christmas on Campus Campaign Inauguration Ceremony was held on 9 December at the University Quadrangle.
The beneficiaries of this year’s campaign are the Malta Community Chest Fund and Dar tal-Providenza.
The event was well attended by students and staff. Also present were H. E. Marie Louise Coleiro Preca President of Malta, Fr Martin Micallef, the Director of Dar tal-Providenza; Prof. Mary Anne Lauri, Pro-Rector, and Prof. Alfred Vella, Pro-Rector.
The theme of the ceremony was ‘living togetherness at Christmas time’. The event began with carol-singing, led by the University Wind Ensemble. This was followed by three speeches, delivered by students, on their unique perspective of togetherness during the Christmas season. Matthew Cassar, a law student, shared his perspective as a Maltese university student who participated in voluntary work experiences in Naples and London. Sara Ezabe, also a law student, shared her perspective as a Maltese Muslim woman who is surrounded by Christmas celebrations year after year. Finally, Benedikt Meyer, an engineering student, shared his perspective as an international exchange student who is living the Christmas season away from home. All three speeches left the attendees moved and reflective. The speeches were followed by a moment of silence during which the three students lit the candle of togetherness, while the attendees united themselves with all those who are suffering during this Christmas season. The event ended with a short reflection by the President, during which she shared how moved she was by the three speeches. A final carol was sung, and refreshments were served.
