A Memorandum of Understanding creating a framework of collaboration has been signed in Moscow by the Rector of Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), Prof. Victor A. Sadovnichy, and the Rector of the University of Malta (UoM) Prof. Juanito Camilleri.
Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) counts numerous Nobel Laureates and foremost historical and contemporary academics within its annals. It is the top university in the Russian Federation and enjoys the highest National and International recognition. It works closely with the Russian Federation Government from which it receives considerable support. (More information available at this .)
The Maltese delegation accompanying Prof. Camilleri included Prof. Charles Sammut (Dean, Faculty of Science), Dr Andrew Sammut (Dean, Faculty of Engineering) and Prof. Ernest Cachia (Dean, Faculty of ICT).
During this visit, another Agreement for collaboration was signed between the Faculty of Physics of MSU and the Faculty of Science of UoM. The Agreement was signed by Prof. Nikolay N. Sysoev, Dean of the Faculty of Physics, and Prof. Charles Sammut. Several meetings took place, including those with the Rector of MSU, with Vice-Rector Prof. Andrey A. Fedyanin, also from the Faculty of Physics, Prof. Nikolai N. Sysoev, and Prof. Alexander N. Vasiliev, the Chair of Low Temperature Physics and Superconductivity and Head of the Solid State Physics Division, and other high-ranking academics. The Maltese delegation was also shown around some of the MSU Faculty of Physics laboratories and was given a description of some of the research work being undertaken there.
The invitation by MSU to UoM was timed to coincide with Universities' Day in the Russian Federation, celebrated on 25th January, known as Tatiana Day, which is also the official MSU Foundation Day. The Maltese delegation was invited to participate in the festivities for Tatiana Day, together with other visiting delegations and various Russian dignitaries and Members of Parliament. University of Malta Rector, Prof. Camilleri, was amongst those invited to address the gathering in the main hall of MSU during the principal event.
The visit by the Maltese delegation to Moscow followed that by Prof. Nikolai N. Sysoev, Dean of the Faculty of Physics of MSU, to the University of Malta last October, when Prof. Sysoev had talks with Prof. Charles Sammut, Dean of the Faculty of Science, as well as with the Dean and Deputy Dean from the Faculties of Engineering and ICT respectively.
