Ms Alexandra Mifsud, an assistant lecturer at the University of Malta, has recently presented a research paper at the Symposium on Sustainable Development Research at Universities in the UK, which was held at Manchester Metropolitan University between the 5 and 6 April 2016. The Symposium aimed at bringing together the various academic research efforts on sustainable development in the UK and provide a multidisciplinary overview of current research on sustainable development. Ms Mifsud is an assistant lecturer with the Centre for Environmental Education and Research (CEER). She is completing a Ph.D. in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) at London South Bank University.
Ms Mifsud鈥檚 research paper discusses how ESD at the workplace can be a catalyst for behavioural change amongst employees. The research on which the paper is based was carried out with employees of a tertiary education institution. The findings suggest that any programme of Education for Sustainable Development must be rooted in context and tailor-made for the specific organisational circumstances in which it is to be implemented. This notwithstanding, the research found that ESD programmes for employees were severely lacking, and employees were not empowered or engaged to participate in devising such programmes. The research paper also explores the potential of infusing thinking skills in the design of employee programmes in Education for Sustainable Development, and the potential for behavioural change through the application of such thinking skills.
