Teaching through the Eurovision: a multimodal project is coordinated by Dr George Cremona at the Faculty of Education. The main aim of the project is to critically analyse how the Eurovision Song Contest, viewed yearly by over 90% of the Maltese population, can be used within classrooms to motivate students and help them learn more effectively. Since the launch of the project in 2014, apart from a number initiatives conducted with various schools in Malta, three Faculty of Education students have also decided to focus their undergraduate dissertation research questions on issues related to the Eurovision and its educational value.
Last week, another important development occurred when Dr Cremona was invited to conduct a number of lessons with foreign language secondary school students in Stockholm. The students had the opportunity to learn various grammar points through Eurovision related material.
After the lessons, Dr Cremona analysed the student reactions with their Swede foreign language teachers. Similar to indications from Maltese classes, it was noted how Eurovision related material, when used critically, may serve as an effective pedagogical tool within the selected foreign language learning contexts.
