Universities of the Third Age have mushroomed all over the world because elderly people like to congregate, discuss, learn, and above all contribute to the society to which they belong. Life today has become longer than ever before; and although retirement is still a landmark in a man’s life, it definitely does not signify the end of mental activity. Many of today’s elderly have had limited opportunity of gaining enriching learning experiences outside their work interests during their working days. One can say that real life, free of constraints, of worries and of imposed responsibilities, starts with retirement. Yet, as long as one lives, one feels a natural yearning to know more, to explore and to understand. The University of the Third Age (U3A) is making this possible for everyone.
Thinking keeps us young. The programmes of the U3A are specially planned not only to give information but, to be intellectually challenging and to exchange knowledge. It is not right that the experience and expertise of the elderly should go to waste. The elderly can and should remain solidly in the centre of the community which they served assiduously for so many years.
The University of the Third Age, which forms part of the University of Malta, is accepting applications from persons interested in attending lectures for the programme to be held during 2016-17, as from Monday 12 September 2016 from 09:00 to 11:00 at the U3A office, ground floor Catholic Institute, Floriana.
