The Department of Anatomy within the Faculty of Medicine & Surgery has recently organised its annual thanksgiving service in honour of the generous persons who have donated their body for medical education and research.
This was held on the feast of our Lady of Sorrows, 23 March, 2018, at 10:00 at the University Chapel. It was well attended by relatives of the donors, together with prospective donors, Faculty staff and medical students, together with the Rector, Professor Alfred Vella.
The Rector addressed the congregation at the end of the service, praising the noble act of body donation and highlighted the important contribution this gesture provides to the education of future doctors and specialists. He also took the opportunity to announce that the University has accepted the proposal submitted by the Head of Department, Prof Jean Calleja Agius, to build a memorial in honour of these donors on University grounds.
Chief Architect Christopher Spiteri then proceeded to outline the advanced plans for a memorial within the Chapel grounds, designed by Architect Rowena Gauci, as a space for remembrance and prayer for the repose of the souls of body donors.
