After the two previous forums in Barcelona 2016 and Lisbon 2017, the III MedThink 5+5 Forum was held in Algiers between 25 and 27 June 2018. The interdisciplinary forum brought together more than fifty experts and representatives of think tanks and diplomatic institutions from the northern and southern states of the west Mediterranean, with the focus, this year, being on 'Human Development as a Driver for Cooperation in the 5+5 Dialogue'.
The third edition of the Forum was co-organised by the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) in collaboration with the Algerian National Institute of Strategic Global Studies (NISGS). Papers were presented to trigger collective reflection on the growing inter-regional flows of people and resources, with special attention given to youths.
Professor Ronald G. Sultana addressed the issue of unemployment in a context where many young people were not benefiting from their investment in formal education. He spoke about the vibrant educational initiatives that he has documented in Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Egypt and Tunisia, and noted the increasing policy attention being given to career guidance in the region in support of youth transitions and the promotion of entrepreneurship.
Professor Sultana drew on his recent publications in this area, notably Career Guidance and Livelihood Planning across the Mediterranean: Challenging Transitions in South Europe and the MENA Region (Sense Publishers, 2017), and Career Guidance for Social Justice: Contesting Neoliberalism (Routledge, 2018).
