Prof. Jonathan C. Borg, Plenary Speaker at ICMIMT19
Prof. Jonathan C. Borg from the Department of Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering (DIME) was one of the invited plenary speakers at 2019 IEEE 10th International Conference on Mechanical and Intelligent Manufacturing Technologies (ICMIMT19) recently held in Cape Town, South Africa. Prof.Borg’s presentation entitled ‘Emotional Products Exploiting the Merger of Industrial & Engineering Design’ outlined the results of work that has been on-going at the University’s Concurrent Engineering Research Unit that forms part of DIME. In his keynote address, Prof. Borg outlined research performed on a number of artefacts ranging from cosmetic packaging for the make-up sector, digital camera enclosures to modular hand prosthesis. He explained how CERU researchers have been able to exploit the experiential knowledge gained to generalize an approach termed EngUstrial Design that systematically merges industrial and engineering design mind-sets. He went on to explain the significance of the approach for structuring knowledge for developing Knowledge Intensive CAD (KICAD) systems as well as for the design of academic programmes. His presentation raised a healthy discussion and was very well received. During the conference, Prof. Borg also acted as Chair for one of the parallel sessions.
